History of gematria
Gematria is older than its name and wider than any one religion. The origins of gematria are not one moment but several, and this is the story in order: an Assyrian king who built a wall to the value of his name, Greeks who turned their alphabet into numbers, rabbis who made comparing sums a rule of reading, kabbalists who systematised it, a Renaissance magician who gave Latin letters values, and the numerologists and web calculators who produced the English ciphers in use today.

Before the alphabet had numbers
The oldest known example of a name being treated as a number — the nearest thing to a single origin of gematria — is not Hebrew or Greek at all. It is Assyrian.
In the eighth century BCE, King Sargon II recorded that he had built the wall of his new capital at Khorsabad 16,283 cubits long “to correspond with the numerical value of his name”[1] Source: Gematria. Cuneiform was not an alphabet, so the mechanism was different from later gematria — Mesopotamian scribes had long associated signs with numbers in scholarly and cryptographic contexts — but the idea is fully present: a name has a number, and the number can be built into the world. Gershom Scholem’s survey notes that Stephen Lieberman and others have traced several rabbinic techniques to this Mesopotamian scholarly background[8] Source: Gematria.
Greek isopsephy
The decisive step was an alphabet whose letters were numerals. The Greeks of Ionia developed the alphabetic system — α–θ for 1–9, ι–ϟ for 10–90, ρ–ϡ for 100–900 — by the sixth century BCE, and it spread through the Greek world in the Hellenistic period, displacing the older acrophonic numerals[2] Source: Greek numerals. Once every written word was also a sum, comparing sums followed naturally. The Greeks called it isopsephia, “equal pebbles”, after the counters used for reckoning.
By the first century CE it was popular culture. A lover at Pompeii scratched “I love her whose number is 545” on a wall[3] Source: Isopsephy. After Nero murdered his mother, a Greek verse circulated — Suetonius preserves it — reading “a new calculation: Nero killed his own mother”, which works because Νέρων and the phrase for matricide both total 1005[4] Source: The Lives of the Caesars: Nero, §39. Poets wrote isopsephic couplets whose lines summed alike; magical papyri and oracles used letter-totals; and the practice passed into the Greek-speaking Jewish and Christian communities of the eastern Mediterranean.
Hebrew letters become numbers
Hebrew adopted the Greek idea. From the late second century BCE — Hasmonean coins are the earliest clear witnesses — the 22 Hebrew letters were used as numerals in the same three-tier pattern, stopping at ת = 400 because the alphabet ran out[1] Source: Gematria. The word gematria itself is a Greek loan, whichever Greek word it comes from[8] Source: Gematria. Whether the Hebrew Bible already contains deliberate gematria is disputed: the Jewish Encyclopedia judges that the Bible has “no reference to numerical gematria”, while allowing that a few later readings — the 318 of Genesis 14:14 above all — may reflect genuine ancient intent[6] Source: Gematria. The rabbis: a rule of reading
Gematria enters Jewish literature as a named method around 200 CE, as the twenty-ninth of the thirty-two hermeneutic rules attributed to R. Eliezer ben Jose the Galilean[6] Source: Gematria. The Talmud uses it sparingly and mostly homiletically: Abraham’s 318 men are his servant Eliezer (אליעזר = 318)[7] Source: Nedarim 32a; the thirty days of a Nazirite vow are read out of יהיה = 30. The Mishnah’s own estimate of the technique was modest — a “side-dish of wisdom” — and the encyclopaedias agree that where it seems to ground a law, it is better understood as a memory aid for a ruling that stood on other grounds[6] Source: Gematria.
Alongside it the rabbis used related letter-techniques: notarikon (reading a word as an acronym), atbash and other substitutions, and symbolic numbers. All of these were tools for reading a fixed sacred text more closely — which is the setting gematria has always been most at home in.
Early Christian numbers
Greek-speaking Christians inherited isopsephy. Revelation 13:18 invites its readers to “calculate the number of the beast”, 666, “for it is the number of a person”; by about 180 CE Irenaeus was trying Greek names against it — Euanthas, Lateinos, Teitan — and reporting that some manuscripts read 616[5] Source: Against Heresies, Book V, chapter 30. The same century saw Ἰησοῦς = 888 noted as a symbolic counterpart. Christian gematria remained largely Greek and largely confined to these numbers; it never developed the systematic apparatus that Jewish gematria acquired in the Middle Ages.
Medieval Kabbalah
The transformation of gematria from an occasional homiletic device into a system happened in medieval Jewish mysticism. The ground was laid by Sefer Yetzirah, the early “Book of Formation”, which treats the 22 letters as the building blocks of creation[9] Source: Sefer Yetzirah. From the twelfth century the Ashkenazi Hasidim in the Rhineland and the early kabbalists of Provence and Spain used gematria intensively to link words, divine names and verses; in the Zohar and its successors it became one of the principal engines of interpretation[8] Source: Gematria. The dozens of methods catalogued by the Jewish Encyclopedia — “large”, “small”, squared, cubed, nominal, integrated values — are largely the product of this period[6] Source: Gematria. So is the ambivalence: from Ibn Ezra onward, mainstream exegetes were pointedly cool towards gematria used as proof.
Renaissance Latin
Christian scholars of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries — Pico della Mirandola, Reuchlin and their circle — took up Kabbalah, and with it gematria, as a key to scripture. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s De Occulta Philosophia (1533) is the fullest handbook, and Book II, chapter XX contains something new: a table giving the Latin alphabet numerical values on the Hebrew and Greek pattern, padded to twenty-seven characters with consonantal I and V and the aspirates HI and HV[10] Source: Three Books of Occult Philosophy (De Occulta Philosophia Libri Tres), Book II, chapter XX: “What numbers are attributed to letters; and of divining by the same”. Latin had never been a numeral alphabet — Romans counted with I, V, X — so this is the first Latin gematria, and it is explicitly an invention by analogy. Its purpose in Agrippa is astrological arithmancy: sum a name, divide by nine or twelve, read off a planet or sign. Five centuries later, applied by spelling to English, it survives as the “Jewish gematria” of online calculators.
Numerology, 1900–
The twentieth century produced a different lineage. Western numerology, taking shape in English-language books from around 1900, adopted a 1–9 letter chart in alphabetical cycles — the “Pythagorean” table, so named to borrow an ancient pedigree the table does not actually have[11] Source: Numerology. In 1926 the celebrity palmist Cheiro fixed a rival sound-based 1–8 chart in Cheiro’s Book of Numbers, claiming Chaldean origins that remain undocumented[12] Source: Cheiro’s Book of Numbers. Numerology reduces a name to a digit and reads character from it; gematria compares totals between words. The arithmetic is shared, the aims are not, and the two are compared on the numerology page.
The internet era
English gematria as most people now meet it is a product of the web. Gematrix, in the 2000s, established the three-column layout — “Jewish” (Agrippa), “English” (ordinal × 6), “Simple” (ordinal) — and a searchable database of phrases by value[13] Source: Gematria calculator. In the 2010s Gematrinator expanded the cipher list to dozens and gave names to tables such as Sumerian, Septenary and Francis Bacon; Marty Leeds introduced the seven-based Septenary; and Zachary Hubbard’s Letters & Numbers (2018) fixed the “four base ciphers” — Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal, Reverse Full Reduction — as the working set of a large decoding community[14] Source: Letters & Numbers. This is also where the naming confusions began that this site’s methodology page exists to untangle.
Seen whole, the history has a shape. Gematria began where alphabets were numerals, flourished as a way of reading sacred texts, and was twice re-invented for alphabets that were never numerals — once by a Renaissance magician, once by twentieth- and twenty-first-century enthusiasts. Each stage produced real conventions with real arithmetic. None of them, from Sargon onward, produced a number that could mean anything without someone deciding what it meant.
