What a decoder does

A gematria decoder is a calculator that refuses to choose. Instead of one cipher, it runs your text through every table at once, so that any value that recurs — across ciphers, or between two phrases — is visible immediately.

The term comes from the online community that grew up around Gematrix and Gematrinator, and around Zachary Hubbard’s Letters & Numbers, where “decoding” means checking names, headlines and dates against a stack of ciphers for shared values[1] Source: Letters & Numbers[2] Source: Gematrinator calculator. This page gives you the same stack, with two differences: each cipher’s origin is documented, and the arithmetic is always visible so that nothing is a black box.

The 14 ciphers

Ciphers are grouped by alphabet. Whichever group matches what you type moves to the top of the table.

Gematrinator lists roughly three dozen ciphers; most of the additional ones are arithmetic derivatives (a table’s reverse, or its reduction, or a “KV exception” variant)[2] Source: Gematrinator calculator. The 14 here are the ones whose tables can be traced to a named source; the methodology page gives that source for each, and new ciphers are added only on the same standard.

Francis Bacon: case matters

One cipher in the decoder behaves differently from all the others. In Francis Bacon, lower-case letters are 1–26 and capitals are 27–52, so how you type changes the answer: decode = 36 · Decode = 62 · DECODE = 192. Every other cipher ignores case.

The name is borrowed. Bacon’s own published cipher (1623) is a biliteral code that hides a message in two typefaces — a steganographic device, not a letter-value table[3] Source: Bacon’s cipher. The “simple cipher” used by Baconian theorists of Shakespeare authorship is a 24-letter table without case. The 52-value version here is the modern decoding community’s convention, taken from Gematrinator[2] Source: Gematrinator calculator. It is included because people search for it and compare against it, and labelled so that no one mistakes it for something Bacon wrote.

Reading the results honestly

Fourteen numbers for one phrase is a lot of chances for something to look meaningful. Three facts keep a decode grounded.

  1. Many ciphers are not independent. Sumerian is always 6 × Ordinal. Reverse Ordinal equals 27 × (letter count) − Ordinal. Reductions are functions of the tables they reduce. A phrase that “matches in Ordinal, Sumerian and Reverse” has matched once, not three times.
  2. Totals are crowded. With 26 letters and ordinary word lengths, most English Ordinal totals between about 40 and 130 are shared by hundreds of common words. In Full Reduction the range is narrower still. A match at those values is expected, not remarkable.
  3. Spelling is a choice. “Jesus”, “Iesus” and “Yeshua” give unrelated values; Hebrew with and without a final letter differs by hundreds in Mispar Gadol. A decode that depends on picking the spelling that fits has shown only that a fitting spelling exists.

None of this makes the decoder useless; it makes it a tool for finding candidates rather than confirming them. The accuracy page gives the numbers behind these points.

A decoding workflow

  1. Type the phrase. Check the Detected line shows the alphabet you meant — a stray Latin letter in Hebrew text will light up the English ciphers too.
  2. Note the four headline tiles (they follow the alphabet: English base ciphers, or the four Hebrew methods, or isopsephy).
  3. Select a row to see the letter-by-letter arithmetic and, for multi-word phrases, each word’s subtotal.
  4. Use Copy results to paste all values as text, or Copy link to share the phrase with the cipher table pre-filled.
  5. When comparing two phrases, keep the cipher fixed and state it: “X and Y are both 74 in English Ordinal” is a checkable claim; “X and Y match” is not.

What is a gematria decoder?

A gematria decoder is a calculator that runs a word or phrase through many ciphers at once and shows the working, so you can look for values that recur across systems or match other words. This one computes all 14 ciphers on the site — nine English, four Hebrew, one Greek — and shows the letter-by-letter arithmetic for whichever row you select.

What is the difference between a gematria decoder and a gematria calculator?

Nothing in the arithmetic: both add letter values. “Decoder” is the term the online decoding community prefers, and it usually implies seeing every cipher simultaneously plus tools for comparison. “Calculator” tends to mean one cipher at a time. Both words describe this page.

Why does the Francis Bacon cipher give different values for the same word?

Because it is case-sensitive: lower-case a–z are 1–26 and capitals A–Z are 27–52, so every capital letter adds 26. “decode” is 36, “Decode” 62, “DECODE” 192. It is the only case-sensitive cipher here; the others ignore case.

How many ciphers does a full decoder use?

Gematrinator offers around three dozen, many of them arithmetic variants of each other (a cipher plus its reduction plus its reverse). This site implements the 14 whose tables can be traced to a documented source; each is listed on the methodology page with its provenance. More can be added when their origin can be documented.

If two phrases share a value in several ciphers, does that prove a connection?

No. Ciphers built from the same alphabet are strongly correlated — Sumerian is always exactly six times Ordinal, Reverse Ordinal is fixed by Ordinal and the letter count — so “matches in three ciphers” is often one coincidence counted three times. Can the decoder handle Hebrew and Greek?
