The practice

What is gematria?

Gematria is the practice of assigning a numerical value to each letter of an alphabet and adding those values to find the number of a word or phrase.

It began with the Hebrew alphabet, where each of the 22 letters doubles as a numeral — א = 1, ב = 2 … ת = 400 — and a parallel Greek tradition, isopsephy, gave the same treatment to α through ω. Modern English ciphers extend the idea to the Latin alphabet in more than a dozen competing ways.

In rabbinic literature, two words sharing a value were taken as an invitation to compare them: an interpretive tool, never a proof. Today gematria is used by students of Hebrew scripture, by readers of Greek and Latin texts, and by a large online community exploring number patterns in English. What is a gematria calculator?

A gematria calculator assigns a number to each letter of a word or phrase according to a chosen cipher and adds them up. This one computes 14 ciphers at once — English, Hebrew and Greek systems — and shows the letter-by-letter arithmetic so every result can be checked by hand.

Which gematria cipher should I use?

It depends on the tradition you are following. Hebrew text is traditionally read with Mispar Hechrachi, the standard letter values. For English, most people compare English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal and the Agrippa-based “Jewish” cipher. There is no single correct cipher — each is a convention — and the origin of every table is documented on our methodology page.

Is “Jewish gematria” the same as Hebrew gematria?

No. The cipher most online calculators call “Jewish Gematria” applies Cornelius Agrippa’s 1533 Latin letter values to the English alphabet (A = 1 … K = 10 … Z = 500). Hebrew gematria assigns values to the 22 Hebrew letters themselves. Both are offered here and clearly labelled.

What does it mean when two words have the same gematria value?

In traditional Jewish interpretation, words sharing a value were treated as a prompt for commentary — a reason to look for a connection, not proof of one. Because every cipher maps thousands of words onto a few hundred values, matches are common by arithmetic alone. Treat a shared value as interesting, not as evidence.

Is gematria accurate or scientific?

Gematria is a historical interpretive practice, not a science. The arithmetic is exact and repeatable — this calculator always returns the same value for the same input and cipher — but what a value “means” is a matter of tradition and interpretation, and no cipher can predict events.
