What the Pythagorean cipher is
The Pythagorean cipher assigns each letter a single digit according to its position, cycling through 1–9: A–I are 1–9, J–R are 1–9 again, and S–Z are 1–8. In the gematria community the same table is called Full Reduction.
It is the ordinal table with the zeros knocked off — J (10) becomes 1, T (20) becomes 2, and so on — which is exactly the operation Hebrew tradition calls Mispar Katan. The result is a compressed cipher in which totals stay small (rarely above 60 for a single word) and shared values are extremely common. That is a feature for numerologists, who want to reach a single digit quickly, and a caveat for anyone hoping a match means much.
The table
Why “Pythagorean”
Pythagoras of Samos (sixth century BCE) and his school held that number was the principle of all things and explored the symbolism of the first ten numbers. None of that involved the English alphabet, which did not exist. The 26-letter chart in cycles of nine appears in English-language numerology from around 1900 — Mrs L. Dow Balliett and her successors — and was named for Pythagoras to give it a pedigree[1] Source: Numerology. So: the arithmetic is real and consistent, the attribution is honorific. This site keeps the name because people search for it and pairs it with Full Reduction in every table.
Master numbers and variants
Numerology treats 11, 22 and sometimes 33 as “master numbers” that should not be reduced. Applied to the letter chart, that means leaving K = 11 and V = 22 unreduced. Some books do; some do not. This calculator implements Full Reduction only; if a source you are comparing with gives a value 9 higher per K and 18 higher per V, it used the master-number variant.
The other point of divergence is what to do with the total. Numerologists reduce it to one digit (or to 11/22/33); gematria practitioners keep the full sum. Both numbers are shown here — the total in the tile, the single digit beneath it.
Pythagorean vs Chaldean
The two numerology charts are often confused because both give single digits. They are built on different principles. Pythagorean follows alphabetical order; Chaldean, as fixed by Cheiro in 1926, groups letters by sound (A, I, J, Q, Y = 1; B, K, R = 2 …) and never assigns 9[4] Source: Cheiro’s Book of Numbers. Reading a reduced value
Live examples: Pythagoras = 49 · love = 18 · Jesus = 11 · harmony = 40. Because the table compresses 26 letters into nine digits, the value of a word is roughly five times its length, and most single words fall between 15 and 45. Two unrelated words of similar length will share a Full Reduction value far more often than an Ordinal one — which is why a match in this cipher should carry less weight, not more, and why the accuracy page uses it as the worked example.
