What reverse gematria is
Reverse gematria runs the English alphabet the other way. Where English Ordinal has A = 1 and Z = 26, Reverse Ordinal has Z = 1 and A = 26. Reverse Full Reduction then folds those values into single digits, exactly as Full Reduction does for the forward table.

The 27n identity
Every letter’s forward and reverse values add to 27 (A: 1 + 26; M: 13 + 14; Z: 26 + 1). It follows that for any word of n letters:
English Ordinal + Reverse Ordinal = 27 × n
…where n is the number of letters. The reverse value is therefore completely determined by the ordinal value and the word length.

This matters for interpretation. If two phrases of the same length share an ordinal value, they must share a reverse value too — it is the same coincidence seen in a mirror. Counting it as a second, independent match overstates the evidence by exactly double. The same applies, less exactly, to the reductions.
A related curiosity: a word equals its own reverse only when its ordinal total is 13.5 × n, so only even-length words qualify — “love” is 54 in both directions. Spelling palindromes have no special status: level = 79 · noon = 50 in Reverse Ordinal, nothing remarkable.
Not Atbash
Reverse gematria is sometimes described as “Atbash for English”. The comparison is loose. Atbash (אתב״ש) is a Hebrew letter-substitution cipher — the first letter is exchanged for the last, the second for the second-last — used, for instance, to read ששך “Sheshach” in Jeremiah 25:26 as בבל Babylon[3] Source: Gematria. It transforms letters into other letters and only then, if you wish, counts them. Reverse Ordinal leaves the letters alone and simply numbers them from the other end. The mirror-image idea is shared; the operation, the alphabet and the history are not.
Where it comes from
There is no ancient reverse-numbered alphabet in Hebrew, Greek or Latin. Reverse Ordinal and Reverse Full Reduction are constructions of the online gematria community, fixed by Gematrinator’s cipher list and by Zachary Hubbard’s 2018 book, which established the four base ciphers as the default working set[1] Source: Letters & Numbers[2] Source: Gematrinator calculator. Their purpose is practical: more tables give a decoder more values to compare. That is a legitimate thing to want, but it should be understood for what it is — and the 27n identity shows that the two reverse tables add fewer independent values than they appear to.
Using reverse values sensibly
- Report the cipher. “X = 61 in Reverse Ordinal” is checkable; “X = 61” is not.
- When two phrases match in both Ordinal and Reverse Ordinal, check their lengths. If the lengths are equal the second match is automatic.
- Treat Reverse Full Reduction as the most crowded table on the site: its values for single words rarely exceed 60, so shared values are the norm.
