Character of each table

Nine tables, five of them independent

Range, total of A–Z and number of distinct letter values for each cipher. A table with few distinct values produces many shared totals; a derived table produces no new matches at all.

CipherMinMaxA–Z sumDistinctIndependent?Note
English Ordinal12635126YesThe reference table; position in the alphabet. Distinct value for every letter.
Full Reduction191269Derived from OrdinalOrdinal with zeros dropped. Only nine distinct values, so totals are small and crowded.
Reverse Ordinal12635126Derived from OrdinalZ = 1 … A = 26. Ordinal + Reverse = 27 for every letter.
Reverse Full Reduction191269Derived from OrdinalReverse Ordinal reduced to one digit.
Sumerian6156210626Derived from OrdinalOrdinal × 6. Carries no information Ordinal does not; every total is a multiple of 6.
Jewish1900419526YesAgrippa’s 1533 Latin values on English spelling. Half the alphabet is worth 100 or more.
Chaldean181038YesCheiro’s sound-based 1–8; no letter is 9.
Septenary17987YesMarty Leeds’ seven-fold table; two identical palindromic halves.
Francis Bacon12635126YesCase-sensitive: a–z 1–26, A–Z 27–52. Range shown for lower case.

Francis Bacon values are for the word as written (capital J in “Jesus” adds 26). Sumerian is always 6 × Ordinal; Ordinal + Reverse is always 27 × letter count.

FAQ

English chart questions

What is the most common English gematria chart?

English Ordinal — A = 1, B = 2 … Z = 26 — is the table most people mean by “English gematria” and the one to learn first. Full Reduction (the numerology chart) and the Agrippa “Jewish” table are the next most quoted. Gematrix’s “English Gematria” is the ×6 Sumerian table, so check which one a source used.

Why are there nine English tables?

Because different communities built different conventions on the same 26 letters: ordinal and its reductions and reverses from the online decoding community, Agrippa’s Latin table from 1533, Chaldean and Pythagorean from numerology, Septenary from Marty Leeds and the Bacon table from Gematrinator. Only five of the nine are genuinely independent; the others are arithmetic transformations of English Ordinal.

What is the highest value a single English letter can have?

In the Agrippa (“Jewish”) table W = 900, followed by V = 700 and J = 600. In Sumerian Z = 156. In every other English cipher no letter exceeds 26 (or 52 for a capital in the Bacon cipher).

Can I print the English chart on one page?

Yes — the two tables below fit on a single sheet in portrait. Use your browser’s print command; site navigation is removed automatically. The all-alphabets PDF on the main chart page includes these tables too.
