The number 22

Twenty-two is the number gematria is made of: the Hebrew alphabet has twenty-two letters, and every value on this site descends from them. That gives it a different kind of importance from 13 or 666 — structural rather than symbolic. This page covers the alphabet, the biblical acrostics built on it, the words that equal 22, and the modern master number.

Twenty-two letters

From alef to tav the Hebrew alphabet has twenty-two letters, inherited whole from Phoenician; the five final forms are shapes, not additions[1] Source: Hebrew alphabet.

Two sums follow from the alphabet itself and are worth having to hand. The ordinal values 1 to 22 (Mispar Siduri) add to 253. The standard values — 1 to 9, 10 to 90, 100 to 400 — add to 1495. Both are computed here from the same table the calculator uses.

The Sefer Yetzirah, the early “Book of Formation”, made the count cosmological: God “engraved” the world with twenty-two foundation letters, grouped as three mothers, seven doubles and twelve simples, and much later kabbalistic letter-speculation descends from that scheme[2] Source: Sefer Yetzirah. That is the strongest sense in which 22 “means” something in the tradition: not as a value but as the size of the set from which all values are made.

Twenty-two in the texts

  • Alphabetic acrostics. Psalm 119 has twenty-two stanzas of eight verses, each stanza opening with the next letter; Lamentations 1–4 and Psalms 25, 34, 111, 112 and 145 are acrostics too. These are authorial and ancient, and they use letters as an order, not as numbers — the clearest biblical example of a letter-structure that is not gematria.
  • Twenty-two books. Josephus, writing against Apion around 95 CE, counted the Hebrew scriptures as twenty-two books, “justly believed to be divine” — a canon numbered like the alphabet[3] Source: Against Apion. Later Jewish tradition counts twenty-four; the difference is in how Ruth and Lamentations are attached.
  • Twenty-two chapters of Revelation. Often cited; rarely with the caveat that chapter divisions date from the thirteenth century. The count is an artefact of editing.
  • The Bible Wheel. A modern arrangement of the 66 books of the Protestant Bible on 22 spokes in three cycles (66 = 3 × 22), one Hebrew letter per spoke[6] Source: The Bible Wheel. The arithmetic is exact; the significance was later retracted by its own author, as our Bible Wheel article explains.

Hebrew words that equal 22

טובה = 22 · יחד = 22 — “good” (the feminine form, and the noun “goodness”) and “together”. Neither has a large traditional literature behind it; they are listed because they are the everyday words at this value, and because “together = 22 = the whole alphabet” is the kind of observation a reader of gematria is invited to make and then to hold lightly. As a numeral, 22 is written כ״ב, kaf (20) and bet (2)[4] Source: Hebrew numerals.

The master number

In modern numerology 22 is a “master number”: along with 11 and 33 it is left unreduced when it appears as a life-path or name total, and it is read as the master builder, the visionary who realises large plans[5] Source: Numerology. This is a twentieth-century convention. Gematria does not reduce by default and attaches no traits to any number, so “master number” has no meaning inside it; a Hebrew word with value 22 is simply a word with value 22. Readers who want the numerological reading will find the arithmetic on the gematria vs numerology page, worked both ways.

22 in English ciphers

In the ordinal ciphers 22 is a three-letter total; the reduced and Chaldean tables, whose ranges are narrow, reach it with common five-and-six-letter words. Fixed candidate list, all fourteen ciphers:

“Water” hitting 22 in two unrelated ciphers (Full Reduction and Septenary) is the sort of coincidence that looks designed and is not: with values crowded into a range of a few dozen, double hits are routine. The accuracy page puts numbers on how routine.

Summary

22 is the alphabet. Its importance in gematria is structural — the number of letters, the acrostics, the sums of the table — rather than a value carried by a famous word. The master number is numerology, not gematria. Counting chapters in Revelation counts medieval editors.

FAQ

22: common questions

What does 22 mean in gematria?

Above all, it is the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet — the raw material of gematria itself. The Sefer Yetzirah describes creation through the twenty-two “foundation letters”, and the alphabet’s ordinal values 1 to 22 sum to 253. As a word-value, 22 is טובה (“good”, feminine) and יחד (“together”).

Why does the Hebrew alphabet have 22 letters?

Because the Phoenician alphabet it descends from had twenty-two consonant signs, and Hebrew kept them all. The five final forms (ך ם ן ף ץ) are alternative shapes, not extra letters, and in standard gematria they carry the same values as their base letters.

Is 22 a master number?

In modern numerology, yes: 11, 22 and 33 are usually left unreduced and called master numbers, 22 being the “master builder”. That convention dates from the twentieth century and has no counterpart in gematria, which does not attach traits to numbers at all.

Why does Revelation have 22 chapters?

Because the chapter divisions were added in the thirteenth century, long after the book was written. The count is real but tells you about medieval editors, not about the text. Psalm 119’s twenty-two stanzas, by contrast, are authorial: each begins with the next letter of the alphabet.

Is 22 in the Bible?

Not as a stated number of any importance. Its presence is structural: the alphabetic acrostics (Psalm 119, Lamentations 1–4, several other psalms) run through all twenty-two letters, and Josephus counted the Hebrew scriptures as twenty-two books.
